NOTE: YOU NEED AN ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT TO APPLY THE TWEAKS.
Dhiraagu ADSL Internet is slow for the UNLIMITED package especially and any package that is beyond 2MBps. I have noticed this since I am using ADSL 1Mbps and its not as fast as advertised. Plus my bro uses unlimited which is the slowest.
I thaught that the network settings could be tweaked just like how I tweak windows xp and Vista. And I was right. And here are some tweaks I discovered that worked on the slow connections.
As I mentioned before, I am currently using the 1Mbps package and the download speed usually is about 50kbps.( Kilobyte) also 1024 kb = 1MB. After doing some tweaks I got about 5Mbps speed. For an example I downloaded a 10MB file and it completed in 2 seconds. But know that download speed also includes the fastness of the download server.
Here is what you need to do:
1) open up the properties dialog for this connection. Click START > then NETWORK CONNECTIONS. Left click Dhiraagu USB ADSL or the connection you used to connect to the Internet.
2) Click the networking Tab. In this tab there are 3 tweaks that will boost the performance.
Tweak 1) Click the settings under the "Type of dial-up server I am calling" and tick all the settings under PPP settings.
Tweak 2) Under the "this connection uses the following items", untick all except "internet protocol (TCP/IP)".
Tweak 3) select internet protocol (TCP/IP). Then its properties and do as the last image below. Just change the Default DNS server to :
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.222
This is Open DNS server. It is a lot more faster than DHIRAAGU servers. And a lot more faster than servers that you have to pay. Plus its free.
MODEM TWEAKs
Okey now for some modem tweaks. Apply these if you want. I may not be liabled. I am sharing this with you because every modem may not allow this or may not be there.
I am using a PARADYNE modem. If you also have a paradyne, you may be able to apply these tweaks. Then again you need to be logged in as an administrator account.Make sure you are disconnected while this tweak is applied or may cause problems.
- Right click My computer >then manage
- It opens the computer management window. Search for Network adapters , then USB ADSL WAN adapter. right click> properties.
3. In the properties select the advanced tab and look for Number of RX buffers and Number of TX buffers. Then change the values to 1024 both. And then the modem will be restarted.
Thats it for the part one. It may get too long if the whole tweaking guide of mine is included right? So I am trying to break to two or three parts.You all know what a DNS (Domain Names server) is right? If not Google it.

open dns name servers might be faster for those living in us etc etc. but for us using the dns server at dhiraagu ( on dhiraagu connections ) which is right next to us will provide us with the results faster. though the difference might be negligible. might be a good idea to setup the open dns ns servers as secondary and dhiraagu as primary.
I tried this and my connection got slower!! :S why didn't it work?? can you show any proof that this really works??
still giving old download speed :(
i strongly doubt the possibility to download at 5MBps on a 1MBps line. Like you have said you have a 1MBps connection at home, and results in a 50KBps download speed. This could open a possibility that at off-peak hours it may jump to even 256KBps. However, when dhiraagu has allocated you with it means:
Link = 1MBps
-------------
DL speed: 512KBps
UP speed: 128KBps
And even with any tweak, patches, etc it could be virtually impossible to reach a speed limit of you given quota which is [1MBps] against which you claim to be 5MBps. 512KBps could be acceptable.
Hey dudes. Be patient. This is only the first part.
@Anonymous
My proofs will be shown on the 4th part. It will be automatically published on 7th FEBRUARY THurSDAY. OK. If you want the proof so badly follow the following link to the image:

======================
It worked on me and my BROS ADSL.
There are some firefox tweaks that I did to make it faster on next ADSL tweaking epsiode which will air on 3rd of FEBRUARY.
GOOD LUCK guys.

@Maldivestech:
You are correct but ever since I played like this to the connections, the speed shows like that and downloads that fast as I said. Refer to the above image^^
Can you please explain what you are doing a little more. What exactly is going on. What is the RX and TX buffers? Will it cause any damage? Can it be safely reverted back to normal? Will "they" have any problems with this?
@Hassaan:
Hey buddy wotz the use of search engines?
Ok. Thanks. I got the info.
But i don't notice any difference in my speed.
I checked with dhiraagu and speedtest.net
Are we "supposed to" see the difference now? Or do we have to finish the three parts you are gonna post, to see it.
Thanks in advance.
The DNS server doesn't provide bandwidth. DNServers route and resolve remote locations for your packet transfers. So a DNS, much further away from us than Dhiraagu will only reduce the connection speed.
The RX, TX values will modify how your ADSL Modem communicates with your computer. Not the ADSL line.
Removing everything else but TCP/IP settings will remove your LAN customizations and additional feature software. And several authentication protocols. That doesn't affect ADSL speed either.
Or is it just me?
@Hassan
Yeah it includes tweaking firefox also.
@Frostmourne
Nop its not just you however unticking all except TCP/IP can make the speed fast. Because data packets are downloaded through each protocol and if all are ticked the data will take some time to download but if one is ticked, data will download only through one protocol making the speed fast.
RX and TX are buffer settings for modems. Buffers are intermediate temporary storage space allocated between a cpu and a pheripheral device. So basically it is to improve modem data transfer speed to PC. I guess I am not wrong about it.
DNS server is domain names server which can help in faster http webpage loading. I guess again that I am not wrong right?
Well then any how hope it will work at the end of this series.
THe speed semmed to increased a lot. THANKS I HECKER. keep up the awesome job.
This time you got it wrong.
Using OpenDNS would not make browsing faster, infact it would make it (slightly) slower. I would recommend using Dhiraagu DNS Servers are they are closer and would give a faster response.
[Technically speaking OpenDNS servers are more hops away from Male' so would take longer. Check ping and traceroute times to both to verify this claim.]
Increasing the buffers is also a bad move. The bottleneck in the internet path is usually not the connection between the ADSL modem and the computer - It is the Dhiraagu ADSL line itself. [USB 2.0 has speeds over 480Mbps. ADSL=1Mbps.] Since the user does not have any control over the ADSL line settings, it is not possible to change the speed by changing the buffers.
An added disadvantage of using more buffers is that it takes more memory. So not a good idea to increase the buffers, especially those having less memory (their comps would get even slower).
You also got the protocol talk wrong. Just because all protocols are ticked doesn't mean internet data will flow through all. Internet uses IPv4 or IPv6. It won't flow through the other protocols - checked (ticked) or unchecked.
I would recommend no changes to readers setups mentioned in this article. Who am I? I happen to research this stuff since 1996. Checkout my blog http://azhad.net/ on my research.
@Ahad:
Ididnt see any reasearch ye did about speed of internet in your weblog. Sorry dude. And well so it means these didnt work on you right? however they did work on me so no problem with me buddy. You saw the results right?
I have proof that these are the stuffs that I did to achieve those speeds. Good luck with you research dude.
I did do research on speed of the Internet - just not Dhiraagu ADSL. And it's not all in my blog. I learnt about the internet a long time back.
No, I didn't see the results in this part(!) of your article. So, no, I don't think it (your tweaks mentioned in this part) works.
If you really want to prove it works, you need to do basic tests with ping and traceroute and show it. If you do any speed tests, make sure all caches cleared first.
You mentioned your proofs will be displayed in the 4th part - which happens to be a wrong test as you didn't clear the disk cache and memory cache, which is a necessary step to be objective.
DID after and before clearing cache.
BEFORE clearing cache> 9mbps
AFTER clearing cache> 11mbps
Still some things to do:
1. Did you try the same test with defaults (no tweaks)? This is necessary since you claim it is your tweaks that increase the speed.
2. While doing each test, try 3 times and take an average. (being scientific - reduces errors).
3. Try the speedtest with an international speedtest site (like dslreports or my bandwidth place ). This is important because YouTube, torrents and everything, except a few Maldivian sites, is hosted abroad.
If: 1) The tweaks did it (with reasonable difference between the average values), congratulations.
ElseIf 3) DSLReports and Bandwidth place give you more speed than you should be getting, then congratulations again. Cos, whatever it is, you are getting more than you should be getting.
@azhad
well since you are so curious, I will redo the tests mentioned after disabling all the tweaks that I did and post the results. Some other day insha allah.
Do you know what is going on here? When tried to use the speed test on the Dhiraagu website, i get this:
"If you see this page after publishing your website, you not replaced the default placeholder ("index.php"). You can upload/publish your website by using FTP. For more infomation visit http://www.dhivehinet.net.mv/"
Then I tried speedtest.net
It no longer has a server in male'. (male.dhivehinet.net.mv)
Then I tried to use a tool called "Modem Booster", (which really works for me,) I get a error saying that my ISP does not allow pinging.
Do you have any idea whats going on?
Please reply!
h_119a@hotmail.com
When I checked also its like as you say it is buddy. I guess they havent noticed yet so I will just contact them so dont worry. Its not that their server is down a little mistake is there in the JAVAscript place holder ("index.php"). I guess they did edit something in their speed test. Good thing that you noticed.
I have been using Modem Booster for a very long time, without any problems. But now it says that my ISP does not support ping protocol. What can you say about that.
@HASSAAN
[When tried to use the speed test on the Dhiraagu website, i get this.......]
The HTML code has now being fixed and you can use dhiraagu speed test now. [http://dhiraahu.com.mv]
@Hassaan
And I am sorry, because I dont use modem booster.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE IN "VALUE 1024" TO BE ACCEPTED?? COX I SPENT ABT A 5-8 MINS? M USING A USB DIAL-UP MODEM(AZTECH)
@HELP...
It shouldnt take even a minute!! Firstly you should have DISCONNECTED the net or else it will take a lot of time.
err, no matter what you guys do, if you are using something above windows xp sp1 then the TCP/IP packets are limited to 10 sockets. If you can't get better speeds, then unlimit or patch the sockets. The sockets has been limited to 10 in win xp sp3 sp2 and vista is to slow down the spreading of trojans.
I guss that you r corret..! Now that you menstion it.
